There is a saying in Quito that “No Wall is White”.
This is certainly true for Ecuador’s capital in which a huge number of walls, buildings, fences and lamp posts are decorated with creative and elaborate street art. The message of each piece of art varies. Some have religious connotations, some are political while others are simply for aesthetic pleasure. Despite their differences however, one thing is common to all, the fantastic quality of each piece of work.
Quito’s underground artists display their work all over the city. Murals grace every street corner and building front making Quito a true open-air museum of contemporary art. It is clear too that this trend has extended far beyond Ecuador’s capital city, with hundreds of beautiful murals popping up in the surrounding towns and cities. Below are some of my favourites from Quito and the nearby town of Baños.
Enjoy!
